Background

Steve started in journalism for Caters News Agency in 1991 and then worked as a reporter for the Metro News and Sunday Mercury.
In 1994 he joined the then Birmingham Evening Mail as industrial correspondent covering major news stories such as the 'Fat Cat' public sector pay controversies, the rail strike and the Rover car crisis. He co-authored a book on the Rover crisis called 'We Ain't Going Away!' The Battle For Longbridge with historian Carl Chinn in the year 2000.
He worked as news editor, features editor and deputy editor at the Evening Mail before moving north in 2002 to edit the Evening Gazette on Teesside, winning Newspaper of the Year in the North East Press Awards 2004.
From 2005 he edited the Birmingham Mail, relaunching it as a campaigning newspaper for a modern, cosmopolitan city. The title won Campaign of the Year in the Trinity Mirror Media Awards 2006 and Best Regional Newspaper in the Plain English Campaign Annual Awards 2009.
He also edited the Sunday Mercury from 2008, the title winning Newspaper of the Year in the Midlands Media Awards 2009.
Steve was responsible for all journalistic training for Trinity Mirror Midlands from 2005 to 2009. He has regularly delivered courses to local universities and companies and served as an external examiner for the Press Association Training Centre in Newcastle from 2002 to 2009.
